A traditional song from the area of Tzoumerka mountains in Epirus, northern greece. This is a typical song of the wedding. The man goes to the neighbourhood of the girl and wakes her up singing. The girl welcomes him saying that ¨You brought beauty to our awful place¨!

Το ''μανιφέστο ενός νεαρού λαουτιέρη'' θα μπορούσε αλλιώς να λέγεται '' Δυο λόγια για την παράδοση'' ή "ένα ανθελληνικό παραλήρημα''. Είναι κάποιες κουβέντες πολύ σημαντικές για μένα που σχετίζονται με τη μουσική και την παράδοση. Για αυτό είναι σημαντικό για μένα να τις μοιραστώ με ανθρώπους με τους οποίους είτε παίζουμε μαζί, είτε ενδιαφερόμαστε για κοινές μουσικές και παραδόσεις. Σχόλια, αντιρρήσεις, προτάσεις ή τοποθετήσεις ευπρόσδεκτα..!

"Το μανιφέστο ενός νεαρού λαουτιέρη" could be translated as "The manifest of a young lutist" or have as alternative titles "A couple of words about tradition" or " An anti-greek delirium". It talks about things I have learned from playing traditional music but also my opinion or position against some aspects of the tradition. It is very difficult to translate such a big text in english, but I would be happy to give some more info to whoever is interested.

Γεια χαρά σε όλους.

Σήμερα ανεβάζω κάτι μετά απο καιρό, είναι κάποιοι στίχοι που έγραψα και κάπως φυσικά έγιναν ένα μοιρολόι. Στην Ήπειρο, κάθε πανηγύρι ξεκινά με ένα μοιρολόι. Έτσι οι μπορούμε να θυμόμαστε όσους δεν είναι μαζί μας, είτε έχουν φύγει απο τη ζωή, είτε είναι στα ξένα ή δεν μπόρεσαν είναι εκεί για οποιοδήποτε άλλο λόγο. Εγώ θα ήθελα πιο συχνά να θυμάμαι αυτούς που δεν είναι μαζί μας για τον απλό λόγο ότι είναι έγκλειστοι. Είτε στη φυλακή, στο ψυχιατρείο, στα στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης και τα διάφορα ιδρύματα. Γιατί το σύστημα μας δεν θέλει ανθρώπους διαφορετικούς, που λένε και πράττουν αυτά που σκέφτονται, ανυσηχούν, προκαλούν ζημιές και δεν είναι παραγωγικοί, συμπεριφέρονται περίεργα και ακατανόητα, οργανώνονται, μεταναστεύουν, αμφισβητούν και ελπίζουν. Για να δικαιλογείται η ύπαρξη αυτού του σωφρονιστικού συστήματος χρειάζεται και ένας ανάλογος αριθμός έγκλειστων. Για αυτούς είναι νούμερα και μέθοδοι, αλλά ας μην είναι έτσι και για μας. Θα ήλπιζα μια μέρα να μπορύσαμε να ξεκινήσουμε την εκδήλωση χωρίς να υπάρχει ανάγκη για αυτό το τραγούδι. Όταν θα μπορούμε να είμαστε πάλι όλοι μαζί άνθρωποι, άνθη, πουλιά, ελάφια και οι φυλακές στάχτη στη φωτιά που θα χορεύουμε.

Αλλά ως τότε..



Λευτεριά είναι να μπορείς να αγναντεύεις
τα δέντρα και τα πουλιά
να δέχεσαι τον αέρα πάνω σου με όλες τις αλλαγές του
να μπορείς να βρίσκεσαι δίπλα στα άτομα που αγαπάς

Κάθε φορά που κοιτάζω το βράδυ τα αστέρια

This is a song that is a tribute to the imprisoned people. It is written in the form of Epirus μοιρολόι - funeral song. In Epirus every traditional festival starts with a μοιρολόι. In this way we try to remember all the people that can not be with us, either because they passed away or because they are far away. I wrote some words in this style of music and they are dedicated to the people that cannot be with us because they are imprisoned. Either in prison, psychiatric institutions or concentration camps. Hope there comes a day when there would be no need to sing this song, and we could celebrate all together on top of the ashes of all the prisons.



The instruments that you hear are the lute and the clarinet (thanks to Daphne!)

Recordings from Epirus this summer!

Hello!

I want to share a collection of recordings we made this summer in Epirus with my friend Daphne, while traveling, playing music and meeting the local people and their traditions. Unfortunately all the titles and lyrics are in Greek, but you can contact me for any information about the songs.

Σήμερα θέλω να μοιραστώ μια συλλογή απο ηχογραφήσεις που κάναμε αυτό το καλοκαίρι μαζί με τη φίλη μου Δάφνη στην Ήπειρο. Πρόκειται για δημοτικά/ παραδοσιακά τραγούδια που μας τραγούδησαν φίλοι που γνωρίσαμε στο ταξίδι. Ευχαριστούμε όλους για τη φιλοξενία, την ανοιχτοσύνη και την διάθεση να μοιραστούν μέρος της κουλτούρας και της μουσικής του τόπου τους.

Some recordings/ video from Ghana!

Hello!

Just wanted you to know that I have uploaded a collection of recordings from our trip to Ghana with Joan and Aris.

You can listen to them in bandamp. There is mostly people playing the kologo and singing frafra music but also the xylophone, maracash, asalato, kalimba..
The names of the tracks are usually the first name of the person who is playing.

There are also a couple of videos from King Ayisoba's bar, that Aris made and will use for his film about this trip.

Thanks to all the people for the hospitality and sharing of their culture. We learned a lot and still have to.
